Transplants

by uklins, Oct 15, 2009 09:40AM
My mom is dying of liver failure and her doc says that transplant is not an option as she is an alcoholic and has not been sober for at least 6 months.  Is there anyway around this?  Also, her kidneys are now failing so -- even i transpant is an option-- are we too late?  I have taken her home and I am providing hospice care, but I don't want to give up unless there really is no other realistic option...

Thank you.

It would take a lot of time for your mom to get healthy enough for a transplant, and she doesn't have that time even if it were possible.  Your mother chose smoking and alcohol over living, not blaming her, but this was her decision.  She loves you, enjoy your last days together and say everything that you've always wanted to say.  Make peace with her, and enjoy this precious time you have.  I lost my mom suddenly in a car accident, with so much left unsaid, then I lost a son.  This time is truly a gift to both of you.  Hugs to you and your mom.......
