Trying to understand my diagnose

by Larisa__0, Nov 04, 1998 12:00AM

In January of 1998 I suddenly became really tired.  After resting my head for a few moments I stood up and realized I had swollen around the waist.  I became extremely faint and found it hard to breath.  I was admitted to the hospital that night.  When measured it had turned out I had put 17 inches on around the waist in 5 minutes.  My xrays showed that my intestines were extremely swollen and filled with air.  Since that incident I have been in and out of doctors and going throught tests.  I spend 1 week out of every month in the hospital swollen around the waist.  The doctors starve me out and keep me on IV for a week.  The pain is so intolerable they also keep me on morphine the whole time.  I just finished going for my last tests they tell me I have gastritis, IBS and maybe colitis.  Is it possible to have all three.  What does it mean and is there any help for me.

Dear Larrissa,
Reading your e-mail, I was uncertain as to the cause of your problem. I would suggest, however, that your symptoms are not indicative of either gastritis or colitis.  If you have had previous abdominal surgery, I would wonder about a small intestine obstruction.  Impaired gastrointestinal motility could cause these problems but the rapid progression of distention would be unusual for this condition.
