Type A Blood Types and Low Cholesterol

by nanci, Jun 11, 2002 12:00AM
I posted this in another message but it probably got lost in the text.

I read a few times that there is a link between stomach cancer and people who have A positive blood type.  The medical profession doesn't know why.  Plus, I went to a gyn a few years ago who also practiced holistic medicine.  My bad cholesterol has always been low, around 160.  This I thought was a good thing. She told me that most people don't know that low cholesterol is not good at all.  It may have something to do with protecting your heart but what cardiologists don't tell you is it makes you more susceptible to cancers, especially stomach.

When I fired her (long story) and went back to my regular gyn, I happen to mention this to her and she said she never heard anything so stupid in her life!

The alternative doctor is highly regarded and has a large practice so I wouldn't call her a "quack".

This has been in the back of my mind for awhile now only because of my recent gastritis symptoms and the fact I'm A Postive and have low cholesterol.

Your insight/comments are appreciated.

I am A positive and have Reflux Espohageal inflammation. (EGD showed this)  Today, I had a CT scan of the abdomen also.  Reading your post, it seems like I have read something about people with A Positive blood but cannot pin point exactly what.  Geez, I surely hope we are not more prone to Stomach cancer.

As far as the cholesterol goes, The bad cholesterol is the LDL and the normal range for this is under 130. Mine is usually in the 140-150 range although the HDL (good cholesterol) is normal.

I thought normal for LDL was under 200?  Mine is around 164.
And the Type A thing, I've read before.  Anyone else hear about this I wonder?  When you're not feeling well as I've been, the mind runs wild!

When they do the Lipids Blood work, it contains:

Total Cholesterol, which should be under 200.

This test also shows HDL (good cholesterol) and this should be
40 (I believe) and above.  The higher the number, the better.

This test also shows LDL (Bad cholesterol)  This number should be under 130 and they state that if one has a history of heart disease that it should be way under 130.

They also do Tryglercides.  I cannot remember what all this is for but I believe they want this number under 195.

They take these numbers and come up with a % for risks.

I am not a doctor but we have been over all this as a family member had a heart attack and his Tryglycerides were 400 and his total cholesterol was 220.

He now has everything in a very good range with diet, exercise and meds, i.e. lipitor and niacin.
