Unknown liver problem

by CDC, Jul 19, 2001 12:00AM
I was informed 6 mos. ago that my liver enzymes were elevated. I have had high cholesterol for years and take Lipitor. The elevated liver enzymes were found during routine bloodwork. Since then I have had an ultrasound of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. I have also had a CAT scan and a "scope" . The
ultrasound found nothing. The CAT scan showed enlarged bile ducts. They suspected a gallstone or two. The "scope" showed no blockages in the bile ducts but my gastroenterologist feels there is a blockage of some sort "higher up" in the liver . I have absolutly no symptoms. I have no pain. I have recently started to appear slightly jaundice. The doctor feels this is normal when theres a blockage. He wants me to now go for a liver biopsy. He also informed me that my pancreas and gallbladder are "clear". I have been off the Lipitor for the last 4 mos. My
biggest fear is cancer and I'm wondering what could be wrong with me. I have also been tested for hepatitis and the results were negative. I haven't had any alcohol for 6 mos. I was never a heavy drinker but did enjoy beer often.

I HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I WENT THE DOCTORS A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, MONO, AND MY LIVER ENZYMES WERE THROUGH THE ROOF. I WAS A FAIRLY HEAVY DRINKER AND DRINKING WITH THE MONO(I DIDN'T KNOW I HAD IT)MADE MY LIVER HEPATIC. ALL OF THE HEP TESTS WERE NEGATIVE. I QUIT DRINKING TOTALLY FOR 103 DAYS AND THEY WENT BACK TO NORMAL. MY ULTRASOUND WAS FINE THEN AND NOW,ALTHOUGH THE ENZYMES REMAIN RELATIVELY HIGH. I'M ONLY 26 AND HAVE CUT DOWN ON MY DRINKING BUT DON'T WANT TO QUIT FOR A PROBLEM THAT MAY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH DRINKING.
