Unwell for 2-3 days after eating sometimes

by merls, May 08, 2006 12:00AM
Hi

Problems started about 18mths ago (I am now 50) one night I was eating a piece of cheese when I got an horrific pain in the stomach, above navel it was only relieved when pressure put on stomach. Drs said I looked like death, put me straight into hospital and removed gallbladder (I had been diagnosed earlier with one stone)  I never really recovered properly, so had lots of tests one showed I had  mild gastroparesis.  Now sometimes when I eat I become unwell for 2-3 days at a time..I feel really hot "inside" my body (but no temperature) and an uncomfortable feeling inside from navel up to chest bone. (I am on Motilium), I get a slow pulse rate, headache, tiredness when this happens.  I also cannot lay on my stomach or my sides as I get terrible pains (I have had a hysterctomy).  I sometimes get a sharp pain underneath my left rib cage.
I now also have some trouble swallowing food on occasions needing to swallow 2-3 times to get it down and same when drinking fluid.  I can swallow 2 times then on the 3rd time it is like my throat closes off. when this happens I start chocking its like I am ready to swallow but my throat isn't. I have had lots of tests, but everything seems normal. The drs put a lot my symptoms down to menopause and at first I thought they must be right, but I seem to have that side of things settled. I miss a lot of work due to this as I cannot function properly.  When I mention the stomach complaint they say it is stress, but I know it is not it is actual pain and feel terrible. I still do eat greasy foods and can tolerate them pretty well.

hope you can help

An upper endoscopy can be considered if there are problems swallowing.  This can evaluate for many of the upper GI disorders (i.e. mass, inflammation, ulcers etc.).

If there is presence of gastroparesis, you can consider medications like Reglan or pro-kinetic antibiotics (i.e. erythromycin) that can help wtih the symptoms.  Blood tests looking for diabetes should also be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or in consultation with a gastroenterologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

My friend has been having stomach pains alot latley. Sometimes he has them he says that it hurts when he after he eat. He also said that if he lays on his stomach or apply pressure it helps with the pain. He has been seeing his doctors but they still haven't figured it out why he is having these pains. I am very worried about him, if you can please tell give me some advise on what he can do for his pain.
