: I had a upper GI peformed in 1988 in which the results were normal except for the findings of a small pulsion diverticulum in the midthoractic esophagus.  What does this mean?  I found this information in my medical records that I requested from my old insurance company.  After my upper GI, I was told that everything was normal.  I have a concern about this because I was recently placed on Naproxen EC 500mg for inflammation,  possible arthritic conditions and possibile costocondrists.  I read that a possible side effect of Naproxen is that it can cause gastrointestinal problems.  Will this medication hurt me more than help me?
  Thanks for your help

Dear Sharon,
A traction diverticulum of the esophagus is a benign condition in which an inflammatory process of the lung involves the esophagus causing a pulling out of the wall to create a diverticulum.  these are usually located in the mid esophagus.  These conditions are benign and do not cause any problems.  You should be aware, however, that some people taking Naproxen can develop gastric and small intestine inflammation.  These problems are independent of the esophageal diverticulum.
Best of luck
