Upper Right Abdominal Pain

For the last few months (about 10) I have had an ache in the upper right quadrant of my abdomen.
The symptoms I have are as follows.

I get constipated a lot (sometimes it feels like I really have to go and nothing)
Stools sometimes have a thin shape and sometimes are normal
Mucus in stools and sometimes bright blood (traces)
I have a bad cough that seems to come and go but usually occurs if I change position am nervous or just ate (ice cream especially).
The pain from my right side radiates to the right shoulder blade up my back
I have very bad acid reflux (but that is being treated)
I get terrible gas and bloating from everything (belching and flatulence)

Here is the real problem. I have severe anxiety, which can frequently generate all kinds of symptoms. I had an Ultrasound and a CT scan both showed nothing (except Fatty liver). All my blood work comes up clean.
I have no idea what to do at this point. I cannot afford to keep shelling out 200-1000$ per test and keep coming up with nothing the test the doctor has set up for me now is a gallbladder function scan. I would have thought that the CT would have been able to see this if it was an issue. My appetite has not changed nor has my weight I

You know your body best.  I think we can all be accused of an overactive imagination at times.  But I can't help believe all these little signals are meaningful.  Some of us are natural researchers, some intuitively creative, etc...  What matters is you know yourself, your personal truths. Give the gallbladder function test a try.  Ice cream is very high in fat and one of the major trigger foods for this type of gallbladder problem area pain.  I think you have been suffering too long.  Log your symptoms in a journal to help see a pattern or progression of symptoms.  There are some disorders that unfortunately take a while to diagnose thus causing greater expense to we chosen ones.  Try to remain positive and know that we are all here to teach.  Good luck.

I had my gallbladder removed June 06 due to ejection score of 20 on Hidascan with CCK.  I fall into the no relief after surgery category. I recently had MRCP which showed no abnormalities in the pancreas or biliary tracts.  I am on a low fat diet, antispasmodic, and continue to have pain mid and left sided under rib.  The MRI did confirm "adhesions" and that may be causing the slowed and painful digestive process.  I am also going to try a low residue diet to see if that helps.  Doctors still throw out the IBS or Fibromyalgia possibility at me.  But after reading about Adhesion Related Disorders I feel this can explain a lot of my symptoms.

I had all the same symptoms that you have pain in right side
under rib and below.I went to 3 doc finally they drawed blood
again and tested for H-Pylori,it's a helocoptorbactrium,some-
thing like that.It is the main cause of ulsers and cansers in the stomic. It seems like most doc don't know about it.I was treated with a combination of antibotics and other stuff-acid
reducers and pepto-bismo pills for 10 days.It gets rid of the bacteria so the stomic can heal itself over time.I go back shortly to see if I got rid of the bact.

Fatty liver is a serious condition. I guess the way you said it in your post made it look as if you don't think this is a big issue. You need to take fatty liver seriously, it can get worse. It could be the cause of your troubles. Have you been checked for hep b and c? Be sure and check for that so you can rule that out as a cause.

For the last few months (about 10) I have had an ache in the upper right quadrant of my abdomen.
The symptoms I have are as follows.

I get constipated a lot (sometimes it feels like I really have to go and nothing)
Could be a symptom of colitis/crohns.

Stools sometimes have a thin shape and sometimes are normal
Could be a symptom of colitis/crohns.

Mucus in stools and sometimes bright blood (traces)
Could be a symptom of colitis.

I have a bad cough that seems to come and go but usually occurs if I change position am nervous or just ate (ice cream especially).
Acid reflux can cause this. And acid reflux can manifest itself at the same time as colitis/crohns.

The pain from my right side radiates to the right shoulder blade up my back
Could be a symptom of colitis/crohns, but can also be related to your gallbladder. I had it, but my gallbladder was fine.

I have very bad acid reflux (but that is being treated)
Acid reflux can manifest at the same time as colitis/crohns.

I get terrible gas and bloating from everything (belching and flatulence)
Also a symtpom of colitis/crohns.

I had some dule pain in my right upper side just below my ribs on Thanksgiving, the next day the pain got worse. My stomach swelled up and I looked 7 months pregnant, ate dinner that night, I felt like a big knot was in my upper right side and the pain started to move to the middle of my stomach and to my left side and the middle of my back. I went to the emergency room that night due to the pain. They took a cat scan and ultra sound every thing was ok, the doctor told me I had a mild case of pancracitis. That following night I threw up and got dehydrated, went back to the hospital and the doctor on duty told me I had a peptic ulcer. The pain continued so I went to a diffrent hospital and was told I had the stomach flu. To this day I get a lot of bloating and pain on my right side. The pain come's and goes all day long and I belch a lot. I know my body and this does not feel wright.
Thank You, Pattie

Hi everyone,

I am brand new and just found this site, sorry in advanced if not posted properly.

My story: I had surgery for adhesions 2 weeks ago.  I came home and had horrible pain 1 day later that needed major narcotics to get me comfortable.  Anyway, called the surgeon who said it wasn't anything he did and basically blew me off.  I called my gyno. who saw me immediately, put me in the hospital for a CT scan and bloodwork because I had a fever and a small bulge on my bottom left side.  The CT showed air from the surgery and bloodwork was okay.  He sent me home with pain meds. and a followup after I heal some more.

Questions: Everytime I move I can feel my insides shifting all around is this normal?  I was told it is because my organs were all together and now separated so it is okay.
Eating is scary due to the horrible cramps and pain in my lower left abdomen.  Any idea when this may subside or what the cause may be?

I have already had my gallbladder removed, and a  hysterectomy of which never caused as many problems as this.  This is kicking my butt.

Look forward to all your comments.

THANK YOU!!!!

Some people have commented that they have had their gallbladders removed and still get upper right quadrant pain and right shoulder point pain. This for me started 5 years after my gall bladder removal- I have severe pain (7-10 out of 10 daily untreated by pain meds). I had an operation that removed severe adhesion, left me 1200 out of pocket even after pribate health etc. 3 days later the pain was back- I spent a year visiting different doctors- 6 specialists in total, spent $8000 on doctors an tests even though medicare and private health paid some of bills (live in australia) Went to a pain clinic that told me I have Post Colesysectomy Syndrome (After gallbladder removal syndrome) Basically told me that my body feels as though it has gallstones even though every test has come back clear- I am on Oxycontin for the pain and finally have it manageable- I tried every painkiller under the sun first. So this could be something you have. When I look it up on net- american sites say its a transient diagnosis, but I was given it as a final diagnosis and told I would be in pain for rest of my life- so far its ruined 2 years of my life.

Hi I am 55 and live in New Zealand i have suffered with upper right quadrant pain now for over 25 years, i was diagnosed with gallbladder problems in 02 and had it removed i still have the pain. The level of pain is decreased in the mornings and increases as the day go on i have this every day with out fail. By late evening the level of pain is cronic (chronic) along with major bloating. I have undergone every test under the sun and it has cost me many thousands of dollars. I have had some pain control with Tramadol which i was on for 6 years which came with its own problems. I came of the Tramadol this month with major withdrawal systems. I am now looking at treatment using drugs for Anxiety but now have major headaches as well as the original pain. This problem has controlled my life and as i get older i find it harder to cope with the pain. Has any body tried the recipe book Great Taste No Pain ??? i would like to get some real feed back and not just sales hype.

All the best from sunny NZ
Andrew
