Upper right quadrant pain/oily stools

For several years I have had occasional pain in my upper right quadrant.  My prior doctor where I lived before ordered an ultrasound and everything appeared normal.  The pain comes an goes but is never terribly severe.  Now I am having soft stools where there is oil on the water. This doesn't happen every bowl movement but very frequently.  I have an app't scheduled with a gastroenterologist in 3 weeks, but am worried in the meantime that it could be something serious like pancreatic cancer.

Sorry, forgot............also request a celiac disease test. Celiac can often result in oily stools.

In many cases the presence of URQ pain and oily fecal material can be due to gallbladder issues or pancreatic problems. Don't immediately jump to thoughts of cancer, though, since gallbladder issues can create pancreatic issues. Make sure you discuss testing with the doc. You may want to request another ultrasound and a HIDA scan with CCK test. In addition, inquire about doing a liver and pancreatic enzyme blood test. You may also want to see if a low fat diet is of help.
