Please give me information as to where an urgent liver transplant can be arranged for an adult alcoholic. Cost is no object. EDN

Liver transplants have waiting lists. It is againest the law to buy your way to a new liver. Alcoholics may have a harder time qualifying - due to the fact that they may drink their new liver to death also. Check with your local area donor counselors for more information. Family members who have matching tissue can now do live donations. Both recover and can live normal lives.

There are currently over 17,000 people waiting for liver transplants. In 1999, there were approximately 4,500 cadaveric livers available for transplants. Over 800 people died last year while waiting for a transplant and the rapidly increasing number of diagnosed hepatitis C cases will increase these deaths. Although living donor transplants may hold the answer for some who are in need, others will inevitably die waiting for an organ.

I copied this information from an article on the American Liver Foundation Website.
