Using Metamucil as an Ingredient in Recipes?

Using Metamucil as an Ingredient in Recipes?

I wan to make sure I'm getting plenty of fiber (40g per day). While I tend to get my fiber from fruit, vegetable, and grain sources, I find that this is sometimes not enough, for one reason or another. I've been considering adding psyllium husk (ex, Metamucil) to my recipes in order to increase their fiber content. (Metamucil has 5g of fiber per teaspoon, 3g insolluble/2g solluble.) While I'm interested in doing this, I'm wondering whether this might be harmful in the long term, since psyllium husk is used as a laxitive supplement, even though the laxitive effect from psyllum husk comes directly from the amount of fiber.

Can anyone offer advice on this?  Thanks in advance.

P.S.
The intent is primarily to add this to smoothies, mostly, and perhaps soups. If this is OK, can any one offer any cooking/preparation advice when using this particular ingredient?
