Vomit during intense exercise

I know this isn't the best forum to ask this question, but it was the closest I could find.

I have been an athlete my whole life and when I train and compete I give it my all.  I push my body quite hard at times, but don't overdo it too much.

I noticed in highschool that at the end of every cross-country race I would throw up after (or during!) the final sprint.  In fact, during the last mile I would feel the urge to vomit and I would have to slow down.  After a few races like this, I started to skip breakfast completely the morning of a race.  This did not help at all - I would just dry heave instead of vomit.

This urge to vomit during strenuous exercise has been a seriously limiting factor for me.  It does not matter what sport I am doing, if I am really pushing myself then my body responds by trying to vomit.

What physically / biochemically is occuring during these times?  Is there anything I can do to curtail this urge (besides decreasing physical output).  Any light that can be shed on this topic would be great.

Thanks!!

Sorry I was not much help, I am only speaking from my own personal experience.  My trainer did tell me it happens more than we think to people who tend to overdue it.  It is not strange for your body to throw up after pushing your body hard.  One thing I was advised was whenever I felt like I was going to throw up to stop and rest and then start again.  As I have mentioned no 2 people are the same, and there could be other factors and reasons for one feeling sick while working out.

Some people get sick during workouts due to supplements being taken.  I had a friend who vomited all the time. He stopped throwing up when he gave his body a break and stopped drinking all his supps before working out.

However I understand your concern and wish I could have the answers, but I am not a doctor nor a personal trainer. I found something on the web for you..sending it in message form.

hmmm...it really doesn't matter how long before I eat.  Once I push myself hard enough my body will dry heave...or throw up if there is something in there.  I know for sure that it is in response to pushing myself because it only happens when I am peaking in intensity on my body.  However, there has to be something biochemically that triggers the throw up.  Anyone know?,,,any doctors?

Vomiting seems like a strange thing for your body to do in response to really hard exercise...I wonder if it is a product of evolution/natural selection.

Are you eating before you exercise? Wait at least 2-3 hours after a meal to exercise or you may develop cramps, nausea, or vomiting. It is also appropriate to wait at least 30 minutes after exercising to eat a meal. Also, you may want to get a reading of your blood pressure and heart rate. You may be training tooo hard. It could be other numerous tings causing this.  It has happened only once to me, but noticed that when working at the gym some people are vomiting...trainer mentioned mentioned...over doing it and not being hydrated enough. Since then it has never happened to me..just not worth pushing my body that far to vomit.
