What are some of the symptoms of diverticulitis ??

I have a friend with bloody stool.  He has BMs at least 2-3 times daily. He has much bleeding and seems to think he has a bleeding ulcer like his friend except he doesn't have abdominal pain.  He has discomfort at the time of the BMs.
I suggested they call a doctor and request a colonoscopy for possible diverticulitis.

Type in rectal bleeding to google/yahoo and click on one of the many sites that provide further information.  Diverticular bleeding is one possible cause.  If your friend has an ulcer then this is more likely to cause motions to appear black, tarry and foul smelling (the medical name is melena - you may want to look up that as well).

Anyway, as you have mentioned, the most important action is to seek prompt medical advice since rectal bleeding is never normal.
