What do I have to eat to stay regular?

My stomach is not that big.  So I really have a hard time eating the way I am suppose too.  I just cannot eat every two hours even is it is a hand full of nuts or cheese or etc.  I workout and for a 56 year old woman I feel pretty good.  I am just constipated all the time.  My doctor keeps a great eye on me and makes sure that I have all the test for my heart and blood work to make sure all my organs are running right.  If I tell him about things like the constipation he just blows me off and says drink more water or try to eat more protein.  I know I am getting enought fiber!!!  I eat lots of fruit and drink plenty of water.  I don't smoke, I weigh 128 and I am 5'7".  I do everything the doctor tells me to do not because I want to be a good girl.  It is because I want to feel good and be active for my three grandchildren.  Please help me and tell me what you think I can take or  do so I will be regular.  Please remember I do eat smart and the right kinds of meals.  I don't eat alot of food and I do go to the bathroom everyday being that it is hard and constipating.  Then about every fourth day it is pasty and I get a stomach ache.  During this time I go to the bathroom for about two to three hours off and on.  Then it is done and I go back to being constipated and not going at all for a day.  Thanks for anything you can do to help!!!!
