Hi,
I have the wrap almost 17 years ago at a teaching hospital by a general surgeon. In the beginning there was pain passing even mushy food through the wrapped valve. Over time it did get better and I have been eating normally for all these years. However, three months after my surgery my symptoms were back. I went through all the horrible testing again without it showing any problem. Then I was sent to a large medical hospital 2 hours away and my problem was solved without any surgery. It turned out that because I had suffered with chronic pain for more than two years I had the phantom problem. Its like when someone has had pain in an arm or leg for a long time and had the limb amputated but still felt the pain even though the limb was no longer there. It is neurological. My brain had made a perminate pathway that was still sending me signals that I was still having all the burning, chest pain, heavy weight on my chest, coughing, chest tightness and breathing troubles. Well, at that point I was open to trying anything. I was put on a low dose of Nortripteline and it was gradually increases until until a dosage that should stop my discomfort. That dosage is from 25mg to 75mg. My pain stopped at 50mg. Then I was kept on the Nortripteline for 1 year and then weaned off. I havent had any recurrances for 17 years until now. I was told that the symptoms could return in a month or in years and if they did I would need to go back on the nortripteline for 1 year at the dose that stops my pain. I am presently at 30 mg and hope that the horrible symptoms that have come back are neurological and not physical. My doctor feels they are physical and didnt think it was worth the Nortripteline that is an old medication not used much anymore. There are newer medications for neurological pain, but I insisted on this one because I know it worked for me before.
I have found that a gas
-x pill in the evening helped bloating when I needed it. I also found that in the early years belching was impossible but over time became possible. The one thing I avoided in the earlier years was soda as I would get hiccups
. I have never been able to throw up and keep subscripion suppositories in case I get a stomach bug or severe nasua. The work well. I have found that without suppitories for stomach upset that with suffering eventually the nastyness will pass through the bowel. I have felt so great that I shoveled snow every winter, shoveled and spread a truck load of gravel on my driveway last year and painted my whole house. I am a woman and am not post menopausel. Well, now I am also back with the horrible old symptoms and want the surgery again if the Nortriptiline doesn't work. Not happy that most posts seem to have unsuccessful surgeries. I was able to raise a 1yr old and 5 yr old as a normal mom and I will forever be greatful. Now they are 19 yrs and 25 yrs. and I want to continue to be a part of their life and enjoy weddings, grandchildren and life. I will post again in 2-3 weeks to let everyone know if the Nortriptiline worked again or if indeed I need surgery. They Barium
swallow showed that the wrap is still in tact, but it won't show if it's a bit loose. Is there tests besides the PH test to see if the wrap is loose? Thanks everyone I noticed most posts are 1 to 2 years old and I hope everyone will keep checking to learn about Nortriptiline for neurological pain.
