Whats the next step with my hiatal hernia

by nursemonica, Apr 27, 2008 11:28PM
I am 33 now...I was told when i was 21 that the reason i had a spontaneous pneumothorax was because of my 3 month of dry coughing which started because i had this thing called GERD....Wow....Then the doctors put me on Prilosec for my GERD....I've been on that pill since i was 21....i have to take it everyday and even if i miss one pill,i am really sick the next day....well now i;m 33 and am having more frequent palpitation...worse after eating and at night....A doctor i work with told me that i need to have an endoscopy and blood test....He is really shocked that i have been on Prilosec for that long....My question is what do i do about this now?

I agree with the doc's suggestion. You need to find out what the heck is going on in your system. The best way to start that is via an endoscopy and blood test to check for H. pylori. Find out exactly what the lining of your esophagus, stomach and duodenum looks like and talk with a good GI person about what's next. You also want to find out the status of the hernia.

I hope you're also following a GERD diet.

I also am experiencing chest pressure and I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia w/GERD.  I am having a pH monitoring test done next week and a repeat endoscopy on May 27.  I did have ulcers in my esophagus but not Barrett's from what I was told.  They also drew blood today so I am guessing they are checking for H. pylori.  I have been taking Protonix 20 mg 2x a day since August.  I had my GB removed in Sept. and my symptoms went away but now they are all back again.  I wish you lots of luck.
