What's wrong with my mother?

by G1222, Jul 05, 2002 12:00AM
My mom has been sick for 3 weeks now.  She has been vomiting and having diarrrhea along with abdominal pain.  She called the doctor and he told her to take some over-the-counter drug (something to do with enzymes) to do something with the stomach lining.  Also she was supposed to eat gelatin and clear liquids then move on to BART (bananas, applesauce, rice & toast).  She has followed this regime and the vomiting has come back.  What in the world could be causing her to be so sick?

Thanks.

Your mother could have any number of digestive problems that would cause this reaction.  It would be difficult to speculate at this point.  She should get an appointment as soon as possible with her doctor, or if possible, and more preferable, a gastroenterologist/digestive specialist.  If her condition worsens, she could go to the emergency room for assistance.  She needs to be seen and treated by a physician as soon as possible since the home remedies are not helping.  Good luck.

I don't have a clue what could be causing the original probelm, but I would get her to the ER for dehydration.  Vomiting and diarrhea will cause that and it can be very very dangerous.

Thanks for your help.  I did take her to the ER on Friday.  Her gallbladder failed and she had to have it removed.  She was severely dehydrated as well.  She is still in the hospital and in fair condition.  Does anyone know what is the normal amount of time to stay in the hospital after this procedure?
