Will kidney stones & lithotripsy surgery cause constipation?

by HBC777, Nov 07, 2009 10:36PM
My husband had Lipotripsy surgery a week ago Friday for an 8 mm kidney stone that was in his urethra tube.  They felt that they were able to "blast" the majority of the stone and advised us to anticipate fragments to continue to be released and possibly a small stone over the next week.  Although he hasn't passed  "stone" yet the fragments seem to be all out.  The past five or six days, he has painful stomach pains, back pain, constipation, very bloated, and burping.  Is this common to experience? He has had to take a fleet enema to reduce the vomiting and inability to keep anything down.  What can he do to relieve this pain?

Is he taking narcotic pain meds for the pain?  That alone can cause severe constipation.  Then you get into a vicious cycle of taking more pain meds to treat the intestinal cramping.  I always have to take stool softener/ stimulant laxative with pain meds or I'm in big trouble.  Check with the doctor for advice on which one to use if you suspect that may be the culprit.

Hydration is very important to flush the kidney gravel out.  It's even more important when taking narcotic pain meds.  Always keep a glass or bottle of water handy.  You'll be surprised how much intake increases if it's with you all day.
