abdominal pain,discomfort

by Jim__0, Oct 11, 1998 12:00AM

I am a 33 yr.old male.I've been having lower left abdominal pain for several weeks.sometimes I experience a general crampy feeling over the entire abdominal area.Often it is an ache or a feeling of pressure in the lower left abdomine.Last week I felt very bloated and the feeling of pressure was more extreme.A visit to the Dr.revealed no blood in stool or urine. He said I had an "incomplete" hernia. Can this cause discomfort across the entire abdominal area or should I seek further advice? Also,is it possible to repair an incomplete hernia or should I just wait until it pokes through?

Dear Jim,
I am uncertain regarding the meaning of an 'incomplete hernia'.  Hernias can be associated with nonspecific abdominal pains. Often, young people with such symptoms have irritable bowel syndrome.  I suugest that you try increased fiber in your diet and addition of over-the-counter bulking agents such as Metamucil.  You should see larger, softer stool that are easier to pass.  If the abdominal pain persists after several weeks of treatment, you should see your doctor for additional tests to exclude organic causes for your symptoms.
