abdominal spasms/constipation/thin stool

My symptoms: 2-3 weeks of bowel problems. When this first started, I was straining very hard to pass either gas or stool (turning red! and ive NEVER had problems with this) with very little actually passing. I got bloated and there was abdominal pain on the left by my hip bone and spasms above that. I tried a mineral oil enema and only diarrhea came out and where the pain by the hip bone was felt like i was blocked there. I took some Miralax a few days later and still saw no improvement at all. The stool that would pass was very small amounts and was harder and darker than usual but no blood. I took magnesium citrate a few nights later and felt A LOT of rumbling in my left abdomen and spasms in the exact same spot i originally felt them on the left side below my rib cage. The magnesium citrate helped me un bloat and pass more gas and diarrhea within a few hours of drinking it. I STILL feel the spasms and pain on the left and i still strain to pass stool or gas but i'm passing more and straining a little less than i was before. The stool is either narrow or thin ribbon like and now lighter in color closer to a brown/green.

The only thing i can imagine to include as a possible factor is the fact that that same week this started, i started a high protein diet consisting of protein bars for breakfast and then protein shakes blended with banana and flax for snack with normal meals for breakfast and dinner. No fever, no blood in stools, the left side from the ribs down to hip bone spasms and there feels like blockage pain. I obviously have stopped the diet but still not regular.... can anyone help?

How many total ounces of water are you drinking each day?  Have you seen a doctor about this?

A LOT actually bc of the diet, it required 4 6oz glasses immediately upon waking to fill me up before eating breakfast....i was also doing a lot of heavy lifting for my job bc we were moving offices, a lot of bending and lifting and now i think I did something to my sciatic nerve bc my left dimple is swollen and its killing me through my left buttock and down my thigh. maybe this has something to do with my bowel problem? I went a lot more today than i have in the last couple weeks without really straining but it was still ribbon like and a little flat still....this is scaring me :(

Welcome to the gastroenterology community!  This could be constipation partly due to the diet change (as things like bananas are constipating).  How much water have you been drinking?
