amaylase and lipase supplements

by wheaty, Jun 10, 2004 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with pancreatitis a few years ago and had not had any episodes for a while. I started taking pacreatin for digestion aid and now I seem to be haveing mild symptoms of pancreatitis. I am scheduled to go in for some blood work and I am curious if taking pancreatin or lipase and amyalase supplements will affect or raise my amaylase and lipase levels higher than normal?

I looked up pancreatin in the PDR and am not aware that they would raise the amylase and lipase levels.  Here are the side effects for this medication:

"ADVERSE REACTIONS SIGNIFICANT — Frequency not defined.
Gastrointestinal: Loose stools (decrease dose)
Respiratory: Mucous membrane irritation or precipitation of asthma attack (due to inhalation of airborne powder)"

If there are symptoms of pancreatitis, you can consider some pancreatic imaging (i.e. with an abdominal plain film or abdominal CT scan) in addition to the serum amylase and lipase.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
