amebic dysentery and its effects

by win, Nov 07, 2000 12:00AM
I had amebic (amoebic) dysentery (e. histolytica) for three years, during which I had bad diarrhea and other symptoms most of the time.  I am now supposedly parasite-free; two sigmoidoscopies have been negative since taking humatin and doxycycline.  But I'm still habing diarrhea, nausea, extreme gas, and acid reflux.  Before getting the correct diagnosis, I had over twenty false negatives on stool tests and samples taken from a colonoscopy.  Does anyone know what the odds of false negatives on a sigmoidoscopy are? Has anyone else had amebiasis (amebic (amoebic) dysentery) for this long?  Are the after-effects (if I'm cured) long-lasting or permanent?
My current doctor has prescribed Librax. I don't want to take it. It had Librium in it, an anti-depressant. I'm not depressed.  I'm physically, not mentally, ill.  Anyone with any experience taking Librax for bowel problems?  Thank you.

Dear win,
Amebiasis can cause inflammation and ulceration of the colon.  The diagnosis, however, is usually not made by sigmoidoscopy but rather by the detection of the organism.  Some individuals may be asymptomatic carriers of the organism.

The symptoms that you describe are not typical for amebiasis.  Amebiasis presents with diarrhea and bleeding.  The question to ask your doctors is whether the symptoms could be due to other conditions.
