I had my appendixAppendectomy removed same time as my gallbladder on Nov 14 (this year). I had asked for mine to be removed though due to off and on lower right quadrant pain over the last year or so. Didn't find out til after the pathology report came back that I was infact suffering from chronic appendicitis. Perhaps the doc noticed your appendix was abnormal, either in size or whatever, and rather than letting you land in the hospital waiting for the darn thing to burst just grabbed it while he was already in there. When you go for your post op check up with your doc, ask him about it. Usually they will tell you what pathology has found. Also, you can (at any time) ask your doc (any of them) for copies of your records. Just for personal use. I like to read the pathology reports and such even though I don't usually understand much of it. ;)
Just ask your doctor about it when you have your followup appointment. constatlyinpain is right: it's always a good idea to keep your own copies of surgical and pathology reports, so ask your doc for copies of those while you're at it. I have never had a doctor react badly to records requests, so don't worry that it will antagonize him. :-)
