bloody stool

recently began having severe abdominal pain followed by bloody gas. This was after an evening of severe diarrhea..

I'm not sure what you mean by "bloody gas" but if free blood is being expelled from your rectum during a "solid + gas" #2 then this needs to be checked out since rectal bleeding is never normal.  The causes can vary from minor to more sinister - with the more sinister reasons (such as cancer) tending to occur only at/after age ~40.

Unless your doctor can 100% assure you that the cause is minor (such as anal fissure or haemorrhoids) I suggest that you insist on a colonoscopy which hopefully will provide you with the maximum reassurance - or at worst - a conclusive diagnosis of the cause of the problem.
