I agree that IBS may be a possibility.
However, given your age, and the presence of blood and mucous, you need a
colonoscopy. This is the most definitive test to exclude colon cancer.
If negative, sending the stool for analysis and culture can be done to exclude malabsorption and infection.
I would also consider a blood test to exclude celiac disease.
