I think he will do much better with his new medicine, and glad they gave him Morphine in the hospital.  Make sure he takes his new medicine with food, unless it directs otherwise.  Have him drink extra water (six glasses is adequate).  Ask those doctors what foods he should be eating before he leaves out of the hospital!  His surgery scar needs time to heal, so he may need help getting up and down.

One time my husband was sick and he passed out cold in our hallway, he hit his head on the way down, made a big bang and woke me up.  I was absolutely terrified to see my man that way.  But of course he returned to normal eventually.  If he should only have soft foods, you can get him one of those morning breakfast shakes, they come in a box with little bags of mix, you put it in milk, and it provides protein, which a good blood cell count is key to strength... see, he had the transfusion probably for that very reason, that he wasn't getting quite enough protein.  Scrambled eggs in a little olive oil in a nonstick pan with some cheese in it should help with that, too.

Let us know how he does if you have time.  If that new pain medicine doesn't work, don't hestiate to go back down to that hospital and complain.  GG

He needs better pain control, for one thing.  If he wasn't in so much pain, he would improve much more quickly.  Whenever a person goes back to eating, they should start slow, with a liquid diet, and then gradually go to a soft diet, and finally begin to eat harder-to-digest foods.  If the deocs would also give him a tranquilizer along with better pain pills, that will stimulate his appetite, but again, he needs to be on a liquid diet for a while.  I know, it's been three weeks since his surgery, but apparently the pain and lack of appetite has slowed his recovery.  It takes a while to get used to a bowel that has been sutured back together, not to mention the gigantic scar they make on a person when they work on the bowels.

I had a relative to had a similar surgery for colon cancer, so on top of getting used to his digestion returning to normal, he also had to do radiation and chemotherapy, which can wreck anyone's day.  It took him about six weeks to recover most of his strength and to feel comfortable about his bathroom habits, and of course for the pain to stop.  So, your husband is right in the middle of recovery, and he's had a little trouble, so now he's back in the hospital to HOPEFULLy get him eating again, recheck his surgery, and give him some pain pills and temporary tranquilizers to get him more at ease, hungry, and pain-free.  If you can get in to talk to his surgeon or whatever specialist that is taking care of him right now, you tell him just how much pain your husband has been in and how he has no appetite, and hopefully they will do SOMEthing for him.  I wish all the best for you and your husband while he goes through this tough part in his life.  GG
