c-diff questions

by mamac40, Feb 26, 2008 08:23AM
Hi Tia,

My name is Marie and my 23 year old daughter has suffered for 3 years with all the symptons of c-diff.  Stool samples always came back negative, but she was given flagyl at least 12 times in the past 3 years and she at times semed like she was greatly improving only to have a relapse with diahrea, cramps, and blood and mucous in her stools.  After extensive tests for Crohn's, colitis, IBS, and c-diff, a positive c-diff test came back with only mild inflammation of the rectum(proctitus).  She ended up being put in the hospital for 6 days due to the dehydration and uncontrollable pain and cramping.  They put her on Vanco for 40 days along with an anti-inflammatory med for the proctitus.  She has 2 more weeks of vanco and we are seeing daily improvement.

Three days ago we went back to the specialists for a follow-up visit.  This doctor now says he is not sure if it was c-diff since he believes that anyone who had c-diff for the length of time she had been sick would have had a lot more damage to the colon, rectum, etc. and the colonoscopy revealed only mild inflammation in the rectum.

My God, we are so confused.   My daughter is feeling better with the treatment.  Actually the last 5 days she says she hasn't felt this good in years.  It is almost like this doctor doesn't want to admit she had c-diff or that my daughter is crazy.  So long as she is feeling better that is all that matters to me but after reading your post I was hoping you could tell me if you had a lot of damage due to the c-diff or not since you to were on flagyl before having to go to vanco.

Thanks for listening and I hope to hear from you.
