Surgery is normally the last resort in the treatment for GERD.

Medications like proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), like Protonix, Prilosec or Nexium can be considered for treatment first.  This can be used in conjunction with other acid reducers - such as H2 blockers (i.e. Zantac or Pepcid).

If medical therapy doesn't work, then you would be looking at endoscopic procedures or surgery.  With these procedures, there are no guarantees that it will 100% reduce the symptoms.

If you are considering these more invasive options, I would discuss this with a gastroenterologist or surgeon.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
