celiac disease vs. celiac sensitivity

by chrissy11787, Oct 16, 2008 02:08PM
My brother was just diagnosed with celiac disease, had endoscopy, blood comp panel was positive too.  I  too had developed some symptoms, diarrhea, upset stomach...went to a doctor...said I should go on an elimination diet, no gluten, milk, dairy, sugar, caffein, etc. At this visit, she also ordered a blood test for the celiac disease panel. So, I went on the gluten free diet, 12 days later went for the blood work.  The doctor informed me that I have tested negative for celiac disease, but positive for gliadin ab (igg) 57 meaning I have a "gluten sensitivity."  I have heard that if you get tested for C.D. when you are on a G.F. diet that it will not show the true results...Could this be the case for me? I had been on a G.F. diet for 12 days prior to my blood work. Does gluten sensitivity mean I should stay away from gluten, but occasionally can have that "slice of pizza?"

Difficult to say without evaluation.

The only way to definitively diagnose celiac disease would be with a small bowel biopsy, which would be done via an upper endoscopy.  It will also differentiate between celiac disease and sensitivity.

I cannot make any dietary recommendations over the internet.  If there is concern about lactose intolerance (i.e. from the pizza), separate testing should be done to exclude this.

This should be discussed with your personal physician.
