chest pain with fever

by Martha__0__0, Aug 14, 1998 12:00AM

4 days ago I had a soreness on the right side of my chest.  It did not hurt it was just sore.  Then on 2nd day in the morning after I ate I had a burning in the middle of my chest like heart burn.  I have not had heart burn in a long time.  I took galvescon tablet and they helped some but my chest was still burning and I was nauseated.  On the next day my chest was still burning and was sore and it hurt a little bit to take a deep breath but I did not cough or as far as I could tell I was not having any drainage.  I have had bronchitis before but it did not seem the same.  On the 4th day I discovered I had 100 fever and my head hurt like it does when I have fever.  I went to the doctor the 5th day because I came home at lunch with chills and fever.  The doctor said he though it was heartburn because I said it felt better after I ate for a short time and that the fever was probably caused by the bronchitis because of the irritation.  He did not take a chest xray because he did not hear any thing.  He told me to take Galvescon liquid and gave me tessalon Perle so I would not cough.  He said he could not give me antibotics because it was virual.  It is 10:30 p.m. and my fever has gone up to 101 and if it gets any higher I will call him tomorrow.  Could it be possible I have a chest infection from heart burn like he thinks it is.  I thought I may have pneunomia but I do not cough up anything.   Also a week and a half ago I was having sinus trouble with a low grade fever and the nurse practitioner gave me claritin to take and I got better.

Dear Martha,
Your symptoms suggest a pulmonary problem such as pneumonia or pleuritis.  Check with your physician to confirm that the chest X-ray is normal.  Esophagitis does not cause fever.  Your physician is correct that sometimes esophageal reflux and pneumonia can produce similar pains, the presence of fever argues for an infectious process.  A chest infection from heartburn would mean that you have aspirated gastric fluids (i,e, gastric contents regurgitated into your mouth and then entered the lungs).  This sequence would give you inflammation that would resemble pneumonia and would require antibiotic treatment.
