choking

Hi let me start by saying thank you for what ever help or advice you can give me . I have had this  problem ever since childhood but as I am older the condition has progressed being 40 this year. Now the chocking happens 3 to 4 times a year it use to happen only once every 2 years.  It mostly happens eating or drinking and some times sleeping. I know when it is going to happen most of the time I feel my throat closing off and I cant do anything about it , some times it starts with a tickle and I gasp and gasp for air but I cant breath. Once my airway is closed off I can do nothing I suck in with all my might making a squealing noise ,I am very scared when this happens and so is my family all I can do is fall to my knees and just befor I pass out my throat opens up. Once the attack is over I feel something deep in my throat around bronchi tubes.
              I have gone to the Doc for tests a barium test but they cant find the problem they have no answers. I am a vet and have to go the VA medical center but will be willing to go outside for help.

Ed, do you ever break out with a rash when this happens? How long a period of time does the 'closure' and the reopening take? Have you tried to track whether it has anything to do with the food you're eating - it is the same type of food items every time? Do you have any symptoms after the episode is over - like a change in bowel habits?
