my mother has had awful coughing for years as well, her coughing is due to seasonal allergies and reactions to wheat and certain food  or milk allergies, she has to watch what she eats and takes  claritin D. She also found that black licource ( candy ) I CAN't spell it( hehe ) helped er stop coughing temporarily, as well as hard candy. hope this is some help.

To: Everyone re cough/GERD
I have GERD but also a chronic cough.  Allergist sez my cough is due to acid coming up past the area that is helped by Prilosec and on into the esophagus.  I cough twice, my nose becomes congested and eyes run, then I sneeze and it passes.  But I do this many times a day.  A hard candy sometimes soothes my throat so I don't react to the tickle of the cough coming on.

He suggested Zantac 150 at bedtime and that helped for awhile, but I'm back to the coughing again.  Also, my ENT sez that too much Zantac can counteract the Prilosec.

Vicous circle.
