chronic ulcerative colitis

hi.my father is suffering from chronic ulcerative colitis from past 5 years undergoing treatment. now secondary TB infection and cytomegalo virus infection occurs probably by taking immunosupressant drugs for long time. his weight is decreasing day by day.what is the best possible treatment to get free from this condition?

Patwari, since UC is an autoimmune disease, your father is unfortunately probably never going to be free of the problem. The best that can be done is to control the problem. He needs to be working with a good doc to find the best drug or combination of drugs to try to tamp down the problem.

For some with UC, they can benefit from surgery, but it can mean removal of a large part or the whole of the large intestine. And care has to be taken to make sure that the problem is UC and not Crohn's colitis, which can sometimes present in the same way and be mistaken for UC.

In short, make sure your father is working with an expert in inflammatory bowel conditions and their treatment.
