cognitive dysfunction after gall bladder removal

by heckstall6, Oct 29, 2009 03:27PM
My 82 year old mother had a gall stone removed in the UK and was scheduled for gall bladder removal 4mths later. That surgery was cancelled as surgeons were reluctant to operate and thought a reccurence of pain unlikely. 3 days later she was admitted with severe pain and scheduled for surgery. Although 82, she was in good health and had never had mental health issues. She had been on Warfarin for many years and had undergone surgery for removal of a kidney 10 years earlier. She has been a virtual vegetable since surgery, a month ago. Her abdomen is very swollen. First, she had suffered a stroke in recovery. Next, it was an infection. She is lost in her childhood and is virtually never lucid. She eats little, will sometimes refuse to open here eyes for days and will not engage with family members although she may recognise them. I feel she is parked in a corner of the hospital to see what happens and that the staff have no idea what has happened to her. They refer to other cases that have recovered after similar symptoms but do not say what the cause was. Now, we are waiting for a second opinion without having really learned the first. I am a layman, obviously very concerned and want to help. Can anybody help me?
