colon resection

I had a colon resection on the 10th August 2010.  Everything was fine for 12 days and then I was re-admitted to hospital with acute pain at incision sight on left side.  I returned home after 5 days with pills and a patch to control the pain.  I was also told to see a pain specialist if the pain got worse.  Has anyone else had this type of complication?  Also, can anyone talk to me about his or her experience after this type of surgery?

About six years ago I underwent a total colectomy.  For about 3-4 days afterwards the pain was controlled epidurally but thereafter the pain subsided and I was pain-free after ~5 days when the epidural needle was withdrawn..  So, after 12 days I would offer the opinion that the recurrence of pain might not be caused by "normal surgical healing of an incision" but maybe by something "internal" and you should seek advice from your surgeon who is responsible for your total recovery and who should not passively delegate the origin and treatment of your pain to a "pain specialist".  In case you may require a follow-up operation, maybe the pain specialist should perform that too??!!

You should not have to see a pain management specialist after this type of surgery.  Something is not right.  Get a second opinion, you are smart to question this.  It sounds like instead of addressing the "cause" of the pain, they want to put a bandaid on it!  Seek a second opinion and go from there, before whatever it is worsens.  Good luck and do take care.
