colon ulcer

colon ulcer

my father - age 72, having colon ulcer ( place of ulcer is 4 cm from anus and size of ulcer is 1mmX1mm).

Some GI doctors are suggesting for surgery, my father is scared.

My question - whether there is any other way to avoid surgery and cure the disease

If this is due to what is called a solitary rectal ulcer syndrome then sucralfate enemas containing an aluminum salt might work. They coat the ulcer and create a barrier against irritants that may allow the ulcer to heal. Corticosteroid enemas and 5-aminosalicylic acid enemas also may help decrease inflammation and aid ulcer healing, but almost anything you can try would have to be prescribed by a doc. So he's going to have to talk to his doc about all the options including surgery if he can't get the ulcer to heal.
