continued mild lower abdominal pain

by garysremodel, Apr 02, 2005 12:00AM
About two weeks ago as i was exercising (weight lifting/bench press), i noticed a slight pain in my left lower abdoman about 4 inches left of my belly button. On a 1-10 pain scale, its probably a 3or 4 at very best.  I recently had a full physical done. I am 47 years old , excersize regularly, (cardio & weight training) don't smoke or drink.( I quit both over 10 years ago) I was diagnosed with hepititus c at the time of my physical, and have had a liver biopsy. The results on the 0-4 scale was between 0 and 1, with hardly no damage found to my liver at all. I am not on any hep meds, but was instructed by my doctor to get another biopsy in 2-3 years.
My question is obviously, what could be causing this sort of mild but worrisome pain? The degree of pain has stayed the same for two weeks. It comes and goes  kind of like a cramp or spasm.  My appetite is the same, and so are my bowel movements and uninary releases.    Could the symtoms be from a stomach muscle strain,  slight hernia, or from some type of intestinal illness?  Like I stated, I've had a complete physical done 9 months ago and was screened for cancer, diabetes, ect. The pain is more noticable when i sit down in a chair. When standing or walking, i don't notice it nearly as much.
Any info and advise that you can shed on this would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Gary

Left lower quadrant pain can be caused by diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, constipation, a hernia or a muscle strain amongst other causes.

I would be evaluated by your physician for these causes.  Diverticulitis is primarily a clinical diagnosis, and if your physician suspects this you can consider antibiotics.   A hernia as well as a muscle strain can also be determined via physical exam.

If the diagnosis continues to be non-revealing, you can consider a CT scan or colonoscopy for a more thorough evaluation.  I would not settle on a musculoskeletal cause until the GI causes have been ruled out.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
