continuing irregularity after emergency surgery for ruptured diverticulitis
I awoke one morning with severe cramping in my lower left abdomin (abdomen) which felt like extreme menstrual cramps. I was doubled over for the first few days and it hurt just walking. I am 52 years old and have not had a period for over a year and before menopause never experienced cramps with my monthly periods, so this severe cramp I was experiencing was definately not normal for me. I was out of town the day the pain started and it was constant 5 days later when I flew home. By the time my plane landed I was feeling really sick, weak, pale, like I was going to pass out. At this point I knew something was very wrong. I sat up in my bed all night "Indian Position" just rocking bak and forth because I was in so much pain and felt so ill. I called 911 for an ambulance.at daybreak. In the ER they ran several tests, i.e. pelvic
organs were absessed. The scans showed an absess (abscess) on the left ovary and falopian tube. When I awoke from surgery they told me that they removed the ovary and tube and had to call another surgeon when they found that I had ruptured diverticulitis also. The ruptured diverticulitis was not caught in any of the scans performed. Why? That is what caused the absesses on my female
organs that they did see in the tests. Neither surgeon has explained or discussed or informed me at all what diverticulitis even means or is. This is all the information I have ever been given about what happened that day in surgery. I was so sick with infection from that bacteria leaking from my colon that I was in the Hospital for 10 days on very heavy IV Antibiotics my room was quarantined for 8 of those 10 days. Anyone entering my room had to first put on disposable gowns, masks, gloves, etc because of the hegh degree of bacterial contamination after my surgery. As far back as 15 years ago I have talked to my doctor regarding blood in my stool, have had colonoscopies, etc. was told possibly hemerroids were the cause, not really sure. Many times I have brought up the fact that I go 2,3 days without a bowel movement and this is not abnormal for me. Yet the Emergency Surgery is the first time I have ever heard of Diverticulitis. And only by doing research myself online do I know what that word means and the causes and symptoms. With all my medical concerns with my doctor over the years regarding my irregular bowel movements and blood in my stool how is it that the diagnosis of diverticulitis has never come up. I still to this date can not get any advice from either doctor about the disease or what I should be doing now. Apparently there are medications people take for this and ofcourse I even know that diet is important. I guess I just don't understand why I can't get answers to my questions from my primary care physician to medical specialists regarding this disease I obviously must have. There is such a thing as Medical Record.... HELP! What should I do. I need your professional advice.
