Thanks for your quick reply.  I'm trying to get her  to go to her primary care physician but that's like pulling teeth.  I hope I'm not so stubborn when I get to be her age.  LOL.

Thanks.

She should have a stool sample to see what's going on.

How long will the black stool continue after taking pep-to bismol?  My mother first complained of abdomen tenderness, she's been to an urgent care, had a cat scan, and blood work after which she noticed the black stool.  She did take some PB for her nausea but I think she took it after noticing the black stool.  Would these test have revealed any issue that would cause the black stool.

My mother is long distance and in her mid 80's, I'm trying to make sure she gets the proper care so any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much.

The medical name for blackish- coloured (often foul smelling) motions caused by the digestion of upper intestinal blood is MELENA.  You may want to google this and learn more in time for your meeting with your doctor.

Black stool is from blood in the stool which can be caused by many different intestinal problems and should be checked out by a doctor.  Dark brown stool is from a change in what you are eating and it is not dangerous.
