diarrhea in toddler

I have a three year old son.  We are having a terrible time with diarrhea.  For about 3 weeks now, he has loose stools every other day or so.Then things seem to get better for a few days, and then back to loose stools.    Today it had alot of mucus in it and smelled horrible.  He does not act sick at all.  Eats and drinks normally and doesn't complain at all about feeling sick.  This is driving me crazy as we are trying to potty train him.  What could be causing this?  We don't let him drink any juices, as we thought that this could have been the problem in the past.   He hasn't had juice in a few months.  He does drink chocolate milk and water.  Should we see the doctor?

thanks for all the advice and ideas.  I did call the doctor and was told all the same things, too.  I have tried the BRAT diet for the past few days ( along with a few various other foods.)  He had a bit of a cold, but not too bad, so I thought about that as well.  I also thought about the lactose intolerant thing, too.  But wondered since he is only having diarrhea one or two times a week ( usually 2 - 3x on one day) if that really could be a problem with the milk.  You would think, it would be everyday, since he drinks milk everyday?  He hasn't had any BM now since Tuesday night, so I am waiting to see if this worked.

Have you considered that it could possibly be lactose intolerance?  Just a thought.

Just wondering if he is experiencing any other symptoms as sinus drainage being swallowed can lead to gastroenteritis and mucous in the stool?  If you can dry up the drainage, usually the diarrhea stops.  If he doesn't have any other symptoms, it would be wise to consult with his pediatrician.  A BRAT diet might also help-bananas, rice, applesauce and toast for 24 hours.  Hope this may help you both.
