The function of the esophagus is to deliver food from the mouth to the stomach. In order to do this, transport by the esophagus requires a coordinated, sequential pattern of movement that propels food down the tube. In other words the circular and longitudinal muscles have to function well and in coordination with each other. Any disruption of this highly integrated muscular motion limits delivery of food and fluid and can cause a bothersome sense of dysphagia and chest pain, or worse.

Various disorders of esophageal motility are referred to in terms of primary or secondary esophageal motility disorders, and are categorized according to their abnormal manometric patterns. Manometry is a form of 'pressure' reading that can be done with specialized equipment within the esophagus.
