Diverticular disease doesn't just go away, unfortunately. You will always have the diverticuli, but you can avoid and inflammation (most likely the cause of your pain) by sticking to a high fiber diet (and I mean HIGH fiber!) and taking over the counter pain killers for the occasional mild discomfort. If you are having an extreme episode, you should go on bowel rest, that is, a clear or full liquid diet for a few days. If it still isn't helping, then see your doctor for further treatment, preferably a good gastroenterologist. I know all of this because I too suffer from diverticular disease AND spastic colon (otherwise known as IBS, irritable bowel syndrome). Oh, and diverticular disease can only be positively diagnosed with a colonoscopy... did you have one?
I don't know what to do either. Please educate us. My Dr. now thinks it is IBS, but it hurts like the diverticulitis episode, which was confirmed on the CT scan. A lot of other things have not been ruled out, such as food allergies, or bacterial overgrowth. Pain is constant. How did you ever find a good Dr.?
If you don't know what to do, then the doctor you went to see didn't do a very good job of educating you. Definately go see a doc if you're in pain again!
