diverticulitis

by cat33, Jul 05, 2007 04:21AM

I went for a colonoscopy not to long ago. The Dr. told me I had diverticulitis or is it diveticulosis anyway he said it was nothing to wory about because about 85 of all people tested have it. Is this true or something else to worry about. Thanks for your input.

Diverticulosis is the condition, and Diverticulitis is when it becomes inflamed or infected.  I had suffered from occassional severe stomach pain since about the age of 13, but no one ever believed it could be anything serious because of my age, so I quit telling doctors about it.  When I was 30, I experienced more severe pain in the same area as before, and this time it resulted in my colon rupturing from an abscessed diverticulum.  I believe I have had this condition since my early teens without the proper diagnosis.  Now that I know I have it, I just watch what I eat and if/when I have sharp intestinal pains that last for more than a day or two, I get myself to the doctor to get antibiotic treatment.  As long as you watch yourself and your diet (take lots of fiber), you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Thank you all for the information. One less thing to worry about. As you can tell I'm a worrier.  And BYBrown hope I never have to go through what you went through  hope your all better by now. I only went in because I was told by my PC it was time since I had never had a colonoscopy before.

I am a worrier too, but I'm of the opinion you can never be too careful when it comes to your health.  One bad experience is one too many for me.  I'm glad you have never had any symptoms, and hope you never do -- it's my understanding that many people have diverticulosis and are never actually bothered by it.  Good luck!!
