I recently had a upper gi series with small bowel follow through and had terrible abdominal pain and diarrhea after for hours. I have recently been tested for celiac disease and I was wondering does the barium
swallow contain gluten? This could explain the TERRIBLE discomfort i felt. I have not gotton my results back yet from the celiac test.
Thank you for any replys.

I had the same test about 4 years ago and I remember waking up that evening with TERRIBLE abdominal pain on the right side. It was so intense I was up all night. I remember the nurse after the test telling me to drink tons and tons of water or else the barium
would turn as hard as cement in your system. I did drink water, and I thought the pain was from not drinking enough water.
Never thought about gluten. To this day, I still suffer from abdominal pains that no one has been able to diagnose, except that I have GERD. I think I will address the gluten. Hope you feel better soon. Keep us posted on your test results.
contrast contains any gluten. It IS, however, very difficult to flush from your system. As the previous poster stated, without a ton of water, the stuff is about like cement in your intestines and can cause the symptoms you describe. I've dealt with that numerous times myself, and know how awful it can be. Sometimes I've had to resort to a stronger laxative
