Dear Dawn:
You can tell me if I’m wrong, but I think what you are referring to is what we term “hepatocyte” transplant. This is a technique where a patient with a failing liver has
isolatedIsolated sleep paralysis liver cells (hepatocytes) infused into blood vessels feeding the liver. The hope is that these individual liver cells will take hold and grow in the failing liver and help keep the patient alive long enough to get a liver transplant.
Several centers have used this technique as a bridge to transplant. It is not a long term treatment in it’s own right. I know there have been some reports involving small numbers of patients that suggest this technique can be
effectiveEffective strength cough syrup in keeping patients alive long enough to get a transplant.
I know that the University of Colorado and the Medical College of Virginia have used these technique and you might want to contact the liver transplant units at these centers if you are interested in learning more.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck with this problem. If you have any additional questions or concerns, you can post them through MEDHELP or contact us directly at Henry Ford. The direct number to our liver clinic is: (313) 556-8865.
