Echogenic is the degree to which sound waves are reflected by a tissue. By implication, it represents the corresponding brightness or 'darkness' on the visual representation that is seen by a diagnostic machine.

Each normal tissue has an 'echo' pattern that is reflected back to the ultrasound machine. If things change within a specific tissue, that will change the 'echo' pattern and indicate that 'something' may be going on that should be examined further.
