elavated amylase

elavated amylase

I am a 28/F. I had blood work taken and my amylase levels are elevated. I think at 142. Doc wants me to get an ultrasound next week. She thinks it could be gallstones, a blocked duct, or the birth control pill, or that I have been drinking too much alcohol. Or the beginning of pancreatitus (pancreatitis). I am freaking out! Does anyone know anything about this?

Have you heard anything yet?  Sounds like you have a good doc!  :-)  Chances are, the BC pills thickened your bile and you have sludge or stones in the common bile duct.  That can cause the pancreatic enzymes to "back up" since the pancreas shares the same duct as the bile from the liver.  The pancreas is one organ that does NOT appreciate being messed with.  It appears your doc is on the right track, and if it is determined that you have stones or sludge, it can be removed with a procedure called ERCP - basically an endoscopy on steroids.  Try not to worry too much just yet - you're in good hands.
