elevated ast, alt

by karen__0__0, Dec 11, 1998 12:00AM

Posted back in Nov. but no reply. I had numbers mixed up. Went to ER for stomach pain. Found my alt at 841 and AST at 1247. Stayed 7 days in hospital to find nothing. Day of discharge my alt was 293 and ast was 34. Tried an ERCP but was inconclusive. I am a 38 yr. old female. Gallbladder removed 1 1/2 yrs. ago with great amount of tiny stones which actually went right through bile duct and dropped into liver. Surgeon explained he couldn't get all the stones out of liver but said they would pass with time. Xrays and ultrasound showed nothing and all other levels in blood in normal range. Just at a stand still at this time. See GI next Fri. to follow up. Any suggestions. Also tested for all hep which were neg.

dear Karen,
It is necessary to exclude common bile duct stones as the cause for your symptoms because of the risk of a more serious problem e.g. cholangitis.  Once gall stones have been excluded, then processes that damage liver cells must be considered e.g. medication-induced hepatotoxicity, industrial exposures.  Often a liver biopsy is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.
