elevated ast/alt

My husband has been diagnosed with Hepatitis C.  His liver panel shows and elevated Bilrubin, direct of 0.25; an AST level of 49; and an ALT level of 93. Under his Protime results it shows a low level on his PT INR(MG) of 1.06. He is also a heavy drinker (at least 40-50 beers a week) Are these considered moderate high levels or does he need to have a liver biopsy to see exactly how much damage has occured due to the hepatits or cirrohsis? What would be the long term effects?

I would recommend that you post your question under the Hepatitis heading.  Many people on that forum have Hep C and will be glad to answer questions and offer advise.
