elevated intestinal alkaline phosphatase

by dkbr, Feb 07, 2000 12:00AM
IN MAY 1999 I HAD MY GALL BLADDAR REMOVED.  MY BLOOD TESTS WERE FINE.  IN NOVEMBER I HAD 3 ATTACKS RESULTING IN ERCP AND A RAISED ALKALINE PHOS OF ONLY 137.  ON A FOLLOW-UP VISIT DECEMBER 16 ALKALINE PHOS WAS 136.  DECEMBER 30 ALKALINE PHOS WAS 162.  AND ON FEBRUARY 2 ALKALINE PHOS WAS 156.  THE DOCTOR FRACTIONATED THE ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE TO FIND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS INTESTINAL.  THE COUNT WAS 71 AND SHOULD BE UNDER 14.  WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.  WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?  THE DOCTORS ARE WORRYING ME.  DO I HAVE SOMETHING TO WORRY ABOUT?  BLOOD TESTS WERE FINE IN MAY.  WHAT IS HAPPEING?

THANKS SANDRA.  I DON'T FEEL VERY GOOD.  MY RIGHT UPPER ARM ACHES MOST OF THE TIME.  IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME.  THE DOCTOR HAS CALLED AND WANTS ME TO HAVE A COLONSCOPY.  I'M SO CONFUSED.  THE DOCTOR HAS ME VERY CONCERNED WITH MY ALKALINE PHOS BEING 156.  AND YOURS IS SO MUCH HIGHER.  HE FRACTIONATED MY ALKALINE PHOS.  THE ELEVATION CAN COME FROM LIVER, BONE, OR INTESTINE.  ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO FRACTIONATE THE ALKALINE PHOS.

Alkaline phoshatase can originate from either 'bone' or 'liver'.  The fractionation process is not reliable when there is only aslight elevation of the alkaline phosphatase, as in your case.  It is our pattern to perform another test e.g GGTP.  If the GGTp is elevated, then we know the problem is liver or bile duct related.

There are many possible causes for a liver alk phos elevation.  Obstruction of bile ducts due to stones, inflammation or infiltration of the liver e.g. due to fat,  It is possible that the elevated result i ssomehow related to your previous gall bladder surgery.

thanks for the suggestion but i thought of that a few months back and he did the fractionation definately coming from liver now white blood count and mvp are also elevated alk phos still at 450 hes not overly concerned this worries me alot

Hello All. My Alk Phos levels suddenly shot up to over 600. I have Hep C, a Kidney transplant, and Depression. I am taking 150mg daily of Effexor and WAS taking 400mg daily of Cimetidine. These two drugs are not compatible with each other!! After discontinuing Cimetidine my Alk Phos level has dropped to 230.
CHECK FOR DRUG INTERACTIONS!

I had a liver transplant in Dec. 1998, Since that time my Alkaline Phosphatase levels have gone from around 130-160. Suddenly, last month they jumped to 456. Anyone have a clue? Thanks.
