experiencing nausea and fainting turns

by Marie1, Jun 21, 2005 12:00AM
My problem is that I have “turns” when I am very stressed, or when I have another illness ie. Flu or stomach bug. Please can you help me to establish what is causing these episodes?

I gradually feel nauseous, (only vomited on one occasion) Nausea may last 3 -4 hours. Feel odd insides prickly \ tingling \ pins and needles sensation in abdomen.  Feel anxious\nervous after nausea has started (not before, as in panic attack and anxiety goes away immediately stomach settles down or if immodium take effect) Feel dizzy, sometimes followed by partial or complete black outs. Always feel better after faint. Heart races, sometimes for several hours. Sometimes cold sweat. This is accompanied by diarrhoea, either at the time or sometimes several hours later or even the next day.

Immediately afterwards: Stomach feels as though it is shuddering, I sometimes shake, feel drained, Cold. Next day or two upset stomach. Feel washed out.

Background
I was told I had IBS 3 years ago, although I didn’t have many of the tests other patients on these pages mention. My symptoms are Diarrhoea (sometimes with nausea) and Hunger pangs\ gnawing.

Diarrhoea, is under control (I only need half an immodium tablet every other day, if I am careful about diet -Avoid fatty or processed foods, alchohol, too much veg) Feel nauseous before and after BM. Do not have any pains or cramps, but I do have hunger pangs\ gnawing, which sometimes wake me up at night. Hunger pangs are worse just before and after eating and go away with antacids or half an hour after food. I do not get heartburn. Sometimes have palpitations after eating and feel cold. Am vegetarian.

Simple things like a viral gastroenteritis can lead to your symptoms.  I am going to assume that this has already been evaluated for.

Other possible causes would include GERD, an ulcer, gallbladder disease.  More specialized causes would be gastroparesis.

A reasonable initial test would be an upper GI series or upper endoscopy.  If GERD continues to be an issue, you can consider a 24-hr pH study can be considered for a more definitive evaluation.

The gallbladder can also be a possible culprit - an abdominal ultrasound would be the initial test to evaluate for this.

You can discuss these options with your personal physician, or in conjunction with a GI evaluation.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
